Between injectables, lasers, skin tightening devices and creams, there are more ways than ever to address wrinkles without surgery. They work very differently, cost very differently and suit different people.
Here's an honest overview to help you decide where to start.
In-office vs. at-home: the key difference
In-office treatments work at a depth that creams can't reach, so they can produce more noticeable changes, at a higher cost and sometimes with downtime. At-home skincare works on the surface: it can help skin look smoother and more radiant, and it protects what you have. As the American Academy of Dermatology puts it, you cannot get the results of a facelift from a cream.
Most people get the best results combining both: in-office treatments for specific concerns and a consistent daily routine to support them.
The main non-invasive options, compared
| Treatment | Best for | Avg. physician fee (U.S., 2023) |
|---|---|---|
| Neuromodulator injections | Expression lines (forehead, crow's feet) | $435 |
| Hyaluronic acid fillers | Volume loss, deeper folds | $715 |
| Intense pulsed light (IPL) | Uneven tone, sun damage | $697 |
| Laser resurfacing / chemical peels | Fine lines, texture | $1,829 |
| Nonsurgical skin tightening | Mild loose or sagging skin | $2,326 |
| At-home skincare | Prevention, maintenance, skin quality | Varies widely |
Fees are national averages reported by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Real costs vary by location, provider and how many sessions you need.
What each one does
Injectables
Neuromodulators relax the muscles that create expression lines; fillers add volume. Both are quick, with little downtime, and results are temporary, so they're repeated over time. If you'd rather avoid needles, read about non-injectable options for expression lines.
Lasers, peels and light
These work on the skin's surface and just below it to improve tone and texture. Downtime ranges from none to about a week for more intensive laser resurfacing, which the American Academy of Dermatology describes as the most effective option for tightening, but with a greater risk of side effects.
Skin tightening devices
Ultrasound and radiofrequency heat deeper layers of the skin. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, results build gradually, often over two to six months, and work best for people with a small amount of sagging.
Microneedling and regenerative treatments
Microneedling creates tiny controlled channels in the skin and is often combined with products like growth factors or exosomes. Learn more in is microneedling worth it?, our guide to exosome treatment and the stem cell facial.
Treatments can change how your skin looks in weeks. Daily habits decide how long those results last.
What you can do at home
- Daily sunscreen: the most effective anti-aging step, and it protects any treatment you invest in.
- Moisturizer: helps fine lines look softer.
- One targeted active: such as a retinoid, peptides or a stem cell face cream.
- Patience: most products take six weeks or more to show visible results.
Between appointments
A daily cream won't do what a clinic treatment does, and it isn't meant to. Its job is to keep skin hydrated and looking its best between appointments, or on its own if you'd rather skip the clinic. That's the role Dr. Joy Kong had in mind for CharaOmni's Stem Cell Regenerative Cream, which brings stem cell conditioned media, the same family of ingredients used in some regenerative facials, into an everyday cream with peptides and hyaluronic acid.
How to choose
- Name your main concern: expression lines, volume, texture, tone or firmness.
- Decide on budget and downtime.
- See a board-certified dermatologist for anything in-office. Ask about results, risks and how many sessions you'll need.
- Build a daily routine either way. It supports any treatment and protects your results.

The bottom line
Non-invasive treatments can make a visible difference, especially for expression lines, volume and texture. At-home skincare can't replace them, but it's the foundation that makes every option work better and last longer.
