Skin doesn't age all at once. It changes gradually, decade by decade, and the signs you notice depend on your genes, your habits and, above all, how much sun you've had over the years.
Here's what actually happens, what speeds it up and what helps your skin look its best at every age.
What happens as skin ages
Two processes work at the same time:
- Natural aging: over time, skin makes less of the proteins that keep it firm and springy, renews itself more slowly and holds less moisture.
- Environmental aging: sun, smoking, pollution and lifestyle add damage on top. This is the part you can influence most.
The American Academy of Dermatology points to sun exposure, tanning, smoking, repeated facial expressions, a diet high in sugar, alcohol and harsh skincare as habits that speed up skin aging.

What changes, decade by decade
In your 30s
The first fine lines appear around the eyes, and skin may look a little less radiant. It's the best decade to build prevention habits. See skincare in your 30s.
In your 40s
Lines become more defined, sun spots from earlier years show up and skin starts losing some firmness. If those spots are what you notice first in the mirror, our Anti-Pigmentation cream was made for this stage: the same stem cell formula, with added peptides and herbal extracts for the look of uneven tone. See also skincare in your 40s.
In your 50s
Hormonal changes around menopause often bring dryness, sensitivity and more visible loss of firmness. See menopause skin changes and skincare in your 50s.
60 and beyond
Skin becomes thinner and drier, so comfort and hydration come first. See skincare over 60.
You can't stop time, but most visible skin aging comes from habits you can change, starting today.
What actually helps
- Protect from the sun, every day. Broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher, shade and protective clothing. This is the single biggest factor. Learn more about photoaging.
- Moisturize daily. It traps water in the skin for a smoother, more youthful look.
- Cleanse gently. Scrubbing and harsh products irritate skin, and irritation makes it look older.
- Don't smoke, and limit alcohol and sugar. All three speed up visible aging.
- Keep your routine simple. A few good products used consistently beat a crowded shelf. Start with our skincare routine for aging skin.
Why we believe in fewer products
Point five is the reason Dr. Joy Kong created CharaOmni as a single step. Her Stem Cell Regenerative Cream takes the place of a separate serum, moisturizer and eye cream, and the feedback we hear most is that skin looks smoother and more radiant with daily use. If you're curious about what's inside, start with our guide to stem cell skincare.
The bottom line
Aging skin is normal, and much of what you see is shaped by daily habits. Sun protection, moisture and gentle care do the heavy lifting at every age. Then add targeted products for the concern that bothers you most.
