Peptides in Skincare: What They Do for Your Skin and Which Ones to Look For

Peptides in Skincare: What They Do for Your Skin and Which Ones to Look For

Peptides show up on more and more ingredient lists, from drugstore moisturizers to luxury serums. But "contains peptides" can mean very different things depending on which peptide, how much and what it's paired with.

Here's what peptides actually are, the main types you'll see on labels and how to get the most out of them.

What are peptides?

Peptides are short chains of amino acids, the building blocks of proteins like collagen and elastin. Your body makes thousands of them, and many work as messengers between cells.

The peptides in skincare are small, lab-made versions designed to send specific signals to the skin or carry useful minerals to it. Because they're so small and specific, each one does a different job.

The main types of peptides

Type What it does Example on labels
Signal peptides Send messages linked to collagen and elastin Palmitoyl pentapeptide-4 (Matrixyl)
Carrier peptides Deliver trace minerals like copper to the skin Copper tripeptide-1 (GHK-Cu)
Neurotransmitter-inhibiting peptides Target the look of expression lines Acetyl hexapeptide-8 (Argireline)
Enzyme-inhibiting peptides Usually from soy, rice or silk Little published research so far

Two of these have their own guides: copper peptides (GHK-Cu) and Matrixyl.

What does the research say?

A 2017 review in the journal Cosmetics looked at the published studies on topical peptides. Several showed measurable results in controlled trials:

  • In a placebo-controlled, double-blind study, a cream with 0.005% palmitoyl pentapeptide-4 reduced fold depth, fold thickness and skin rigidity, measured with optical instruments.
  • In a study with 60 participants, an acetyl hexapeptide formula outperformed a placebo on the look of wrinkles.

The same review is honest about the limits. Many trials were small, often 10 to 40 people. Many tested peptides mixed with other ingredients, so the results can't always be credited to the peptide alone. And how deeply peptides penetrate the skin is still being studied.

Peptides are messengers, not miracle workers. The right peptide, at the right amount, used consistently, is what makes the difference.

Do peptides really work?

The evidence is encouraging, especially for signal peptides and copper peptides, but it comes from small studies. Expect gradual changes in how smooth and firm your skin looks over several weeks, not overnight transformations.

How to use peptides

Peptides are gentle and easy to work into almost any routine:

  • Apply after cleansing, on clean skin, in a serum or cream.
  • Use them morning and night. Consistency matters more than strength.
  • Give them time. Most studies measure results after 4 to 8 weeks or more.
  • Patch test first if you have sensitive skin, as with any new product.

Do I need a separate peptide serum?

Not necessarily. Many moisturizers now include peptides, and choosing one that matches your main concern can save you a step.

CharaOmni Anti-Pigmentation Stem Cell Regenerative Cream 50 ml

We make two versions of our cream for exactly that reason. The original Stem Cell Regenerative Cream blends peptides with stem cell conditioned media and hyaluronic acid, for fine lines, texture and firmness. The Anti-Pigmentation cream keeps that same base and adds extra peptides and herbal extracts chosen for the look of dark spots and uneven tone from age and sun. If discoloration bothers you more than lines, that's the one to look at.

Can I use peptides every day?

Yes. Peptides are generally well tolerated, which is why they're a popular choice for people who find retinol too irritating. If that's you, see our guide to the best retinol alternatives.

Pairing peptides with other actives

  • Niacinamide: a good pair. Both are gentle and work well in the same routine.
  • Hyaluronic acid: adds hydration, which helps skin look plumper while peptides do their work.
  • Vitamin C: fine with most peptides, but copper peptides can interfere with it. Here's how to use copper peptides with vitamin C.
  • Retinol: can be combined, but if your skin gets irritated, alternate nights.

The bottom line

Peptides are one of the gentlest, best-tolerated anti-aging ingredients available, with promising but still limited research behind them. Look for products that name the specific peptide, use them consistently and pair them with hydration and daily sunscreen.
